Elizabeth Ann Coleman wrote in The Opulent Era — Fashions of Worth, Doucet and Pingat pp. 68-69 (1989), "Charles Frederick Worth made it a principle to encourage the various industries related to the dressmaking trades in France in response to the ongoing support he received from them. The greatest benefactors were to be the textile mills in Lyon. Worth and his heirs sought to bring renewed and continuing prosperity to this city long famed for its fine textile commodities. Upon the death of Charles Frederick, one of the first actions of the Worth sons was to send a substantial order for the most magnificent materials known to the silk manufacturers of Lyon, affirming that the house would carry on its tradition of employing only the very best. For the next twenty years, up to World War I, singular fabrics were one of the glories of Maison Worth." The attention paid by Worth to opulent materials shows in this dress worn by Maria Feodorovna in 1898.

Compared to the mind-blowing dresses made using luxurious materials often worn by Maria Feodorovna, this dress is comparatively modest. The jacket forms a shallow-vee waistline that, with the sleeves, leads me to believe this dress was made around 1900.

Here is another gorgeous Worth dress worn by Maria Feodorovna, this time in the 1900s, with close sleeves adorned with beaded tulle and lace. Her large jabot is hung like a cone with the apex at her neckline so large parts of the inside are visible; it is so large that it hides most of the lapels of what could be her jacket bodice. Panels of beaded tulle rest on her jacket bodice like the panels of a vest.

This selection shows how Maria Feodorovna liked white dresses with substantial trimming, but always showed good taste. The right dress uses spangled muslin to cover a petticoat with a pleated edge. The left dress is from the 1900s, and I believe the right dress is from the later 1890s due to the waistlines of both dresses.

The main justification for the Tsar being national defense, the Tsaritsa joined in occasionally wearing uniform dresses like the one in this photo. According to Daniel Briere's posting, Marie Feodorovna was "Shef" (Colonel-in-Chief) of 2 of the 4 Guards’ Cuirassier regiments. The regiment’s lace was gold and their distinctive colour was mid-blue, hence their nickname of "Blue Cuirassiers." Daniel Briere advised that the gold lace did tarnish somewhat and has taken an orange shade (seen in this photo), possibly due to some copper content.
