The procession with all members of the Romanov family walked through the long reception rooms of the Kremlin. A footage show the time where Nicholas and Alexandra came down the long red staircase, this is the first time that a ceremony as solemn is filmed.

After Nicholas took his place beneath a large canopy held by thirty-two Russian generals, with other officers providing additional support. Accompanied by his spouse under a separate canopy and the regalia, he proceeded slowly toward the Cathedral of the Dormition where the ceremony took place. The religious ceremony celebrated in the Cathedral of the Dormition, lasted 5 hours.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - F is for Finland.

For summer holidays on their yacht, the Imperial Family would often journey to the Finnish skerries. They would play tennis, have picnics in the open air, swim in the sea, and take photographs of each other.

“The Emperor,” remembered Sophie Buxhoeveden, “would go to shore with the gentlemen of his suite to walk or play tennis on a rather primitive court, and in autumn there was generally some shooting, in which the officers of the yacht joined. The young Grand Duchesses sometimes went about with their father, replacing their mother, while the little Tsarevich played with the ship’s boys on the rocky beach. It was a healthy life for the young people and the bracing air of Finland did them all good.”

There was a real explosion of photography in Russia around 1900 when the Kodak Brownie camera (originating from Rochester, New York, United States) made its appearance. Tsar Nicholas II and his family were great collectors of photographs. Pictures were carefully pasted in big albums, many of them green and stamped with gold crowns. These albums were all over the private quarters of the family, but many of them were kept stacked up on the ledge of the balcony of his New Study in the Alexander Palace. In dozens and dozens of volumes they covered his entire life from childhood right up to his exile to Siberia in 1917.

When World War I broke out, the Big Pair, their mother, and several other female Romanov relatives became Red Cross nurses. They cared for wounded soldiers in a private hospital on the grounds of Tsarskoye Selo. Some buildings in Petersburg, notably a large portion of the Winter Palace, were converted into hospitals.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - M is for the Mauve Boudoir.

When Alexandra came to Russia she was involved for the first time in creating her own living spaces. She was inexperienced and most of what she knew about decorating came from magazines and the advice she had received over the years from of her English Grandmother and observations of Victoria’s old-fashioned, sentimental style of decorating which dominated a century. Her objective was to create a bright and cozy environment for her husband and future family. She wanted a room where Nicholas could come and unburden himself from the affairs of government - a sanctuary where they could be together, safe and alone.

The Mauve “Boudoir” was Alexandra’s favorite room and for 20 years it was the center of her family’s life in the palace. At the time it was the most celebrated room in Russia and the subject of much gossip as to the events that were supposed to have taken place there. Even today it remains a room of mystery and it is the room of the palace which interests the public the most. The room was also much derided for its’ style and family atmosphere by elite society of the time. Elegant Petersburg thought proper Romanov Empresses should live semi-publicly in splendid rooms graciously decorated in the latest style with fine art and sophisticated furnishings.

Alexandra liked the color mauve and she personally picked the fabric and hue. It is said she asked for a color to match a favorite sprig of lilac given to her by Nicholas. In Russia the color mauve is called “lilac” and there this room is called the “lilac” boudoir. Mauve was popular at the time and it became increasing so during the Edwardian era.

Often, there had been accidents, big and small. The worst episode was at their hunting lodge, Spała, in the year of 1912. The boy was in so much pain, everyone thought he would never get better. But fortunately, he eventually recovered.

The next bad bout of bleeding was when Alexei had an sledding accident while the family was in exile. Alexei never walked again, as a few months later the whole family were executed.

There are also another notable illnesses in the family. Tsar Nicholas II was sick with Typhus in 1900. He was so bad off so many people thought he was going to die and the question of succession to the throne was on the rise in a terrifying form. At the time Alix was pregnant with Anastasia. There were talks of Alix claiming the regency until the baby, a chance that it might be a boy, would come of age. But of course, the Tsar recovered and another girl was born. He was also a victim of Typhoid fever in 1901.

During the Romanov Tercentenary celebrations in 1913, Grand Duchess Tatiana drank contaminated water and fell ill with Typhoid. She had to cut her long hair and wore a wig during the photo-shoots of that year.

The family was plagued by measles in early 1917. Unluckily, this coincided with the February Revolution and the Tsar’s abdication. All of the children except Maria was ill. Maria was already starting to feel the measles coming on before she and her mother went outside in the freezing weather to plead with the soldiers to stay loyal to the imperial family. As a result she contracted virulent pneumonia along with measles and she nearly died from this.

    historyofromanovs:

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - Q is for Queen Victoria.

After Empress Alexandra’s mother, Grand Duchess Alice of Hesse and a younger sister died in 1878, grandmother Queen Victoria would often act as mother to six-year-old Alix and her remaining siblings. The Hessian Family would often visit the Queen in Britain. Alix was twelve when she met sixteen-year-old Nicholas. Years later, it was clear that they would marry. Nicholas’s parents disapproved of this and considered another brides. When Tsar Alexander III’s health declined and the succession of the throne was quickly approaching, he allowed his son Tsarevich Nicholas to marry the Princess.

At first, Queen Victoria did not approve of this marriage. She have always thought the health of German princesses would always be ruined in the extremely cold climate that was Russia. Victoria was even surprised that Alix’s older sister, Elisabeth, managed to survive the Russian winters.

“Russia I could not wish for any of you,” the queen confessed to Alix’s sister Victoria, just before Ella married Grand Duke Sergei, and was “carried away” to that “dreadful country.” Russia was a “horrid” place, in the queen’s opinion - “so bad, so rotten, that at any moment something dreadful might happen.” Nicholas declared that he would rather become a monk than marry anyone, except for his beloved “Alix H.” The Queen of course relented, the Tsar died at the age of 49, and the imperial couple married a few months later.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - P is for Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербург) is a city and a federal subject (a federal city) of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea.

In Russian literature, informal documents, and discourse, the “Saint” (Санкт-) is usually omitted, leaving Petersburg (Петербург, Peterburg). In common parlance Russians may drop “-burg” as well, leaving only Peter.

Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27 1703. From 1713 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918, Saint Petersburg was the Imperial capital of Russia. The Peterhof Palace (Russian: Петерго́ф,  German for Peter’s Court) is a series of palaces and gardens located in Saint Petersburg, Russia, laid out on the orders of Peter the Great. These Palaces and gardens are sometimes referred as the “Russian Versailles.”

Tsarskoye Selo (Russian: Ца́рское Село́; “Tsar’s Village”) is the town containing a former Russian residence of the imperial family and visiting nobility, located 24 kilometers (15 mi) south from the center of St. Petersburg.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - O is for OTMA.

OTMA was an acronym sometimes used by the four daughters of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia and his consort, Alexandra Feodorovna, as a group nickname for themselves, built from the first letter of each girl’s name in the order of their births: Olga (1895-1918), Tatiana (1897-1918), Maria (1899-1918), and Anastasia (1901-1918). In childhood, the Grand Duchesses came up with ОТМА as a sign of sibling closeness and affection for one another.

♦ — Empress Alexandra and The Charity Bazaar

The climate of the Crimea was ideal for tubercular patients, and from her early married life the Empress had taken the deepest interest in the many hospitals and sanatoria which nestled among the hills, some of them almost within the confines of the Imperial estate. The Empress, out of her own private fortune, built and equped new and improved hospitals.

One of each summer’s activities, chen the family visited the Crimea, was a bazzar or other entertainment for the benefit of the care of those patients too poor to pay for the best food and nursing. From the opening day the Empress always presided over her own table, disposing of fine needlework, embroidery and art objects with energy and enthusiasm. The crowds at her booth were enormous, the people pressing forward almost frenziedly to touch her hand, her sleeve, her dress. The great mass of the Russian people loved and were loyal to their sovereigns. No one who knew them at all can ever forget that. Anna Vyroubova

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - T is for Train.

The Imperial Train had been used by the Imperial Family to travel by land. The abdication of Nicholas II, one of the most momentous events in the history of Russia, took place in an unusual situation and in a casual place. The carriages of the train, where the abdication was signed, became the mute witnesses of the tragedy of Russia.

There was an accident involving one of the imperial trains in 1888. Nicky’s father, Tsar Alexander III, and his family was en route from Crimea to Saint Petersburg. The family had been riding toward Kharkov in the imperial train at a high speed when it crashed near the town of Borki, jumping the rails and causing the roof to collapse into the dining car where the family was eating lunch. Though unhurt, they were pinned to the ground, and strong Alexander, struggling through a narrow space on the floor of the carriage, lifted the iron roof on his shoulders and held there until everyone had crawled to safety. The strain was thought to have permanently damaged his vital. It was said this caused his early death 6 years later.

After the crash, Alexander ordered two new trains to be built, one for trips aboard and one for within Russia. This accident had always been strong in Nicky’s mind. So whenever the train carrying his wife and children was going too fast, he would tell the train conductors to slow down.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet - Y is for Yacht.

Here are various photos of the Romanovs aboard their two favorite yachts: the Polar Star and the Standart. The Russian Imperial Yacht Standart, serving Tsar Nicholas II and his family, was at her time the largest Imperial Yacht afloat.

Elegant style yachts were once the norm among many of the world’s most important rulers. The British, the Danes, and even the Americans have all at one time or another provided their leaders with beautifully appointed yachts that served for both recreational as well as official purposes. But few of these highly specialized ships can compare with the Standart, reserved exclusively for the use of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

The Imperial Yacht Standart (Штандартъ, you can see this word on Alexei’s sailor cap) was built by order of Tsar Alexander III of Russia and constructed at the Danish shipyard of Burmeister & Wain, beginning in 1893. She was launched on 21 March 1895 and came into service early September 1896. The Polar Star was the yacht of the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia, mother of Tsar Nicholas II.

Most of the Romanov Members had blue eyes, especially the Last Imperial Family. Alix had light blue eyes, while Nicholas had dark blue eyes. The children had different colors of blue. Olga’s eyes were blue, while Tatiana had dark grey eyes. Maria’s were deep blue, and they were nicknamed “Marie’s saucers” by various royal cousins, because of the size. Anastasia and Alexei, of course, had blue eyes. Some of the other Romanovs had brown eyes, most notably the Empress Dowager Maria Feodorovna and Peter the Great.

    1. group of people related by blood or marriage
    2. related by blood or marriage; “kindred clans”

Because of Britain’s Queen Victoria and her nine children, the last Imperial Family of Russia is related to almost every Royal Family in Europe. Their relatives include the Royal Families of Britain, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Romania, Spain, Denmark, and Greece.

    historyofromanovs:

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - J is for Joy and Jemmy.

Tsarevich Alexei’s Springer Spaniel was named Joy, which Alexei had received during the early part of the War. Joy was the only living being known to have survived that night in Yekaterinburg. She was found wandering lost and forlorn around the yard of the house, crying for her master. Joy hid during the murder and when the bodies were taken out of the cellar room, he ran out into the streets of Ekaterinburg. Later, Joy was found in the home of an Ipatiex House guard, Michael Letemin.

Jemmy was Grand Duchess Anastasia’s King Charles spaniel (some say the dog was actually Tatiana’s). Jemmy, unfortunately, did not survive the night. He was in Anastasia’s arms when the shooting began, and the dog’s skeleton was found along with his masters. Joy ended her days on a farm near Windsor and was buried somewhere in England.

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - G is for Germany.

The mother of the Last Imperial Children of Russia was born in the German Empire. Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia was formerly Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine, a Grand Duchy that was then part of the German Empire. The family would often visit their family relatives and cousins in Germany. In 1914, all of this changed.

The outbreak of World War I was a pivotal moment for Russia and Alexandra. The war pitted the Russian Empire of the Romanov dynasty against the much stronger German Empire of the Hohenzollern dynasty. When Alexandra learned of the Russian mobilization, she stormed into her husband’s study and said: “War! And I know nothing of it! This is the end of everything.” Both Russian and German Empires were abolished by the end of the War.

    historyofromanovs:

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - O is for the Orthodox Catholic Church.

The whole Imperial Family of Russia was born to the Russian Orthodox religion (with the exception of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna who was converted from Lutheranism). The family was very religious and was dutiful to their faith. In some of the rooms in the Alexander Palace, orthodox icons hanged on the walls. Before the marriage to Nicholas in 1894, Alexandra was troubled by the requirement that she renounce her Lutheran faith, as a Russian tsarina had to be Orthodox, but she was persuaded and eventually became a fervent convert. The Big Pair, Olga and Tatiana, was more religious than the Little Pair. However, Tatiana’s motive back of her religion was: ‘It is my duty,’ while Olga Nikolaevna had it in her heart.

The family was murdered on the night of July 16-17, 1918 at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Russia; the site of their execution is now beneath the altar of the The Church on Blood. The family was canonized in 1981 as new martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (outside Russia). They were canonized along with their servants, who had been killed along with them. All were canonized as victims of oppression by the Bolsheviks. The Russian Orthodox Church inside Russia did not canonize the servants, two of whom were not Russian Orthodox: Alexei Trupp was Roman Catholic and Catherine Adolphovna Schneider was Lutheran.

In 1992, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna and Varvara Yakovleva were canonized as New-Martyr Elizabeth and New-Martyr Barbara by the Moscow Patriarchate. The princes and others killed with them were not canonized. In 2000, after much debate (there were those who rejected the family’s classification as martyrs because they were not killed because of their religious faith), the Romanov family was canonized as passion bearers by the Moscow Patriarchate.

Never they knew that it would be a place of sorrow and distress. In the year of 1912, Tsarevich Alexei accidentally slipped into a boat. The little boy was not hurt at first, but as time progressed, the bruise on his leg was swelling fast. Alexei was bedridden and very ill. His mother Alexandra was distraught and suffered from exhaustion because she stayed awake trying to comfort her son, who was in great pain.

‘When I am dead, I will not hurt anymore, will it Mama?…When I am dead, build me a little monument of stones in the woods.’ Nearly everyone was ready to announce the death of the Tsarevich to the whole country of Russia. Alexandra wrote a letter to Grigori Rasputin, a Russian mystic and “monk,” begging him to heal her only son and heir to the throne. Alexei miraculously recovered right after Rasputin responded, leading Alexandra to believe him a true healer. After Alexei regained his health, Alexandra never wanted to go back to that “dreadful and dark place.”

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - S is for School.

Out of the five Imperial Children, the eldest Grand Duchess Olga was the one who achieved the most in the schoolroom. Olga was the cleverest of all, and was quite a bookworm. She easily grasped mathematical and scientific concepts. Olga wasn’t the only one who loved reading; her younger sister Tatiana loved reading as well. Olga was attached to poetry and literature books (her favorite was Les Misérables), while Tatiana preferred fashion magazines. Olga also enjoyed reading about politics in newspapers.

All of the children were very bright, but occasionally, they become lazy. The younger three children weren’t as scholarly as the oldest two. The Tsar’s Colonel Mordinov remembered Tsarevich Alexei: “Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich was an awfully lazy, but very capable boy (I think, he was lazy precisely because he was capable), he easily grasped everything, he was thoughtful and keen beyond his years.”

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - U is for Uniform (Regimental).

When a Russian Grand Duchess by birth reached 14 years of age, she would be assigned to a regiment as a senior officer. The eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, became Colonel-in-Chief of the 3rd Elizavetgradsky Hussar’s Regiment in 1909. Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna was assigned the Vosnesensky Hussars in 1911, Maria the 5th Kazansky Dragoons in 1913, and Anastasia the 148th Kaspiansky Infantry in 1915. Due to the breakout of WWI, unfortunately for us, Anastasia never had the chance to be photographed in her regimental uniform.

    historyofromanovs:

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - T is for Tercentenary.

“The morning of March 6, 1913, was cloudy in Saint Petersburg - leaden would be a better word to describe the heavy skies, the mist, the torrents of rain and occasional roll of thunder that broke over the city on what was meant to be a day of national rejoicing, the tercentenary of the Romanov dynasty.

Three hundred years before, at a sixteenth-century monastery on the banks of the Volga River, a deputation of princes, warriors, boyars and clergy had hailed Michael Romanov, the teenage nephew-by-marriage of the late Ivan the Terrible, as the new tsar of Russia, thus putting to an end the twenty years of civil strife known as the Time of Troubles.

Cossacks, lancers, cavalry, dragoons, scarlet-clad trumpeters, and teams of prancing white horses did nothing the dispel the general gloom. Neither did the gravity of the tsar’s expression nor the appearance of his son, Tsarevich Alexei, the eight-year-old heir to the throne who had to be carried during the celebration. The child’s left leg was bent at the knee which was due to the 1912 accident in Spała, crippled beyond any attempt to hide it. That the Tsarevich was ill was known, but the nature of his illness remained a mystery to all but the immediate family.

Immediately behind the tsar, his wife, and his mother the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, stood the tsar’s daughters, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia, teenage girls of particular loveliness. There was hardly a soul in St. Petersburg who could have distinguished one of the girls from the other, so sheltered were their lives. For the rest of that tercentenary spring, the sun saw fit to shine on the Romanovs, at least when it came to official appearances.

In May, the imperial family took a week-long boat trip along the Volga, retracing the journey of the first Romanov tsar from Kostroma, where he had been called to the throne, to Moscow, the ancient capital and spiritual heart of Russia. In the winter of 1913 the dowager empress gave a brilliant ball at the Anichkov Palace for the tsar’s eldest two daughters the Grand Duchesses Olga and Tatiana, who danced till four in the morning. But when the proud father took his daughters home on the last train from town, he unknowingly brought down the curtain on the girls’ first and last appearance in St. Petersburg society.”

Happy 117th Birthday, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna!

Today is Grand Duchess Olga’s 117th birthday. It was the story of Anastasia that piqued my interested in the Romanovs, but as I have “gotten to know” Olga, she has become my favorite by far.

Anna Vyrubova said of her “Olga was perhaps the cleverest of the girls, her mind being so quick to grasp ideas, so absorbent of knowledge that she learned almost without application or close study. Had she been allowed to live her natural life she would, I believe, have become a woman of influence and distinction.”

„The Grand Duchesses were fast leaving childhood behind them and blossoming into charming girls; they did not greatly resemble one another, each was a type apart, but all were equally lovely in disposition. I cannot believe that any men so inhuman existed as those who, it is said, shot and stabbed those defenceless creatures in the house of death at Ekaterinburg. Apart from their beauty, their sweetness should have pleaded for them, but, if it is true that they have “passed,” then surely no better epitaph could be theirs than the immortal words, “Lovely and pleasant were they in their lives, and in their death they were not divided.” - Lily Dehn

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - V is for Victorian Era.

The Victorian era of British history was the period of Queen Victoria’s reign beginning from 20 June 1837 to 22 January 1901. The era was preceded by the Georgian period and followed by the Edwardian period. Victoria’s granddaughter, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, was pregnant with Grand Duchess Anastasia when the Queen died in 1901, thus marking the end of the Victorian Era.

    historyofromanovs:

The Romanov Family’s Alphabet v.2 - W is for War.

The opening of the war was greeted in Russia, as everywhere else in Europe, with overwhelming enthusiasm in an orgy of nationalist feeling that took even the participants by surprise. Tens of thousands of people feel to their knees outside the Winter Palace and sang the Imperial hymn when Nicholas and Alexandra appeared to greet them on the balcony on the day that war was declared.

The war brought out the best and the worst in Alexandra and Nicholas both - the best in their sincere and absolute dedication to the cause of Russia’s victory and the relief of her suffering soldiers, the worst in their failure to see that war could not be an answer to Russia’s problems at home. Within a month of the formal declaration, the tsar left for the first of many tours of his army’s headquarters. The tsar was never happier than when he was with military men.

Alexandra threw herself into nursing work, taking her daughters and friend Anya with her. Some of the imperial palaces in St. Petersburg had been converted into hospitals. After two months of intensive training, Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana, and Anya were certified as qualified nurses, while the younger grand duchesses, Marie and Anastasia, were established as “patronesses” at a smaller hospital in Tsarskoe Selo.

During the summer and fall of 1916, Alexandra and her four daughters made several trips to the Army’s headquarters at Mogilev. By late 1916 Russia was reaching the point of no return. On the stalemated eastern front thousands upon thousands of young Russian men continued to die in a war that now seemed pointless. Away from the fighting, the country was falling into economic chaos. The following months would bring the death of Rasputin, revolution, and the tsar’s abdication.

The Revolution came like the death of a friend who had been “lying sick for years and years,” according to Sydney Gibbes, the English tutor of the imperial children. It was neither unavoidable or unexpected, yet it took everyone by surprise. It was “a quite unbelievable event,” recalled Gibbes, and “a sad, sad time for all concerned.”

    Anastasia Romanov
